Green IT

Staying green and minimizing our carbon footprint.

Does the University support energy conservation?

Adelphi prides itself on being a leader in energy conservation and recycling. In 2003, it was the only higher education institution in the region to install a geothermal heating and cooling system that decreased energy usage by almost 30% in three years. All new campus construction meets the criteria for Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council.

Beginning in 2003, the Office of Information Technology identified “green goals” and has been actively involved in reducing energy use through:

  • consolidation of servers
  • conversion to monitors with energy-efficient flat panel screens
  • implementing a software program to automatically turn off the computers in the instructional labs at midnight
  • implementing a paper management program

IT Goes Green LogoIn September 2008, Adelphi received first prize in Computerworld’s Green IT Awards for excellence in “Reducing IT Complexity Increases Green IT” category.

The Sustainable Adelphi website was created to detail the University’s environmentally friendly actions and provide energy-saving tips.
